Nantes ultras stand shut by UEFA for Juventus clash

UEFA’s disciplinary commission has sanctioned Nantes for their fans’ lighting and throwing of fireworks in Europa League game against Qarabağ, ordering the Loire stand, where the ultras are notably located, to close for their reception of Juventus in the knockout stages at the end of February.

The statement indicates that Les Canaris have also been fined a total of €42,000, partly due to blocking of passageways. Nantes have also been warned for “insufficient screening and searching of supporters”.

The club had been handed a suspended ban of the stand after similar events in the match against Freiburg at the start of October. As a result, the club’s historic European tie against the Italian giants could be without their most fervent supporters, a blow to the atmosphere in the stadium, as well as a financial hit in terms of the fines inflicted on them. Nantes have announced on Tuesday night that they would appeal the decision.
