La Provence is reporting that Olympique Marseille owner Frank McCourt is “no longer willing to put his hand in his wallet.” The club will therefore have to spend before further purchases. 

During the current window, Marseille have already invested heavily, largely in players who spent last season on loan at the club and who had purchase options, or obligations, inserted into their contracts. There have been nine incomings, including Mattéo Guendouzi (23) for nearly €10m and Pau López (27) for nearly €11m. 

McCourt has injected nearly €400m into the club since 2016, but the American is no longer willing to spend, at least for now. President Pablo Longoria will therefore have to make the limited funds at his disposal go further. There may also have to be an increased focus on sales in order to “balance the accounts.” 

Whilst some high-profile names, including Boubacar Kamara (22) and Steve Mandanda (37) have departed the Orange Vélodrome this summer, they have done so largely on the free. Only Lucas Perrin (23), who joined Ligue 1 rivals Strasbourg, left for a fee (£1.35).
