SMSU wrestling claims first victory over Augustana since 1998-99

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Cole Wilson defeated Michael Lowman by decision, 8-2, in the 285-pound and final bout to seal Southwest Minnesota State’s first dual victory over Augustana College since the 1998-99 season and just the fifth in series history (5-24). SMSU took the dual by a score of 15-14.

SMSU and Augustana each won five bouts by decision, but Augustana was flagged with an unsportsmanlike penalty after the 157 pound bout that eliminated the Vikings of one team point.

With the win, SMSU improves to 5-2 overall, 2-0 in the NSIC, while Augustana suffers its first conference loss of the season and falls to 6-3 overall, 2-1 in the NSIC.

The Vikings and Mustangs traded the first two bouts as TJ North defeated SMSU’s Antonio Meikel 7-1. No. 8 Justin Reinsma got SMSU on the board with a 6-4 decision over Morgan Engbrecht.

Augustana would take the next two bouts to build a 9-3 lead as Jacob Anderson and Shawn Hatlestad defeated Ethan Hildebrandt and Beau Buysse, respectively at 141 and 149 pounds.

Codie Lane edged Mitchell Rechtzigel in the 157-pound bout, 4-3, to close the team score to 9-6, but Augustana’s point total was reduced from nine to eight after the unsportsmanlike penalty was issued. Kyle Begin and Jacob Begin followed Lane’s victory with decision victories of their own at 165 and 174. Jacob’s win was his fifth straight, but his victory by decision ended his consecutive pin streak at four.

Augustana regained the lead at 14-12 after taking decisions in the 184 and 197 pound bouts.

Cole Wilson controlled the final bout of the night as he scored a 3-point near-fall in the first period and never looked back as he cruised to an 8-2 decision over Lowman at 285.

SMSU will break from NSIC duals this weekend as the Mustangs will compete in four duals at the Midwest Duals hosted by Nebraska-Kearney in Kearney, Neb., this Saturday, Jan. 18, starting at 9 a.m.

The Vikings look to regroup and head to Kenosha, Wis. for the Ranger Duals where they will face two top-20 opponents in Indianapolis and McKendree as well as perennial power Findlay on Saturday, Jan. 18.
