Fellaini extends Man Utd deal until 2020

The Old Trafford club jumped ahead of the midfielder by announcing he will stay at Old Trafford for another two years

Manchester United have announced that Marouane Fellaini has signed a new deal that ties him to the club until 2020, putting an end to speculation over the Belgian’s future.

The 30-year-old was set to be a free agent when his contract expired on July 1, and he promised to reveal a decision on his future on Sunday while he is at the World Cup with Belgium.

There were rumours that the former Standard Liege star was on his way to Italy, as AC Milan director Massimiliano Mirabelli claimed he would not sign a new deal and was in talks with the San Siro side.

However, United have jumped ahead of Fellaini and confirmed that he will spend another two years at Old Trafford, with an option to extend for a further season.

“I am pleased to be continuing my journey as a Manchester United player,” Fellaini told the club’s website. “I made this decision because I am very happy here. Also, I feel like this team, under Jose, still has a lot we want to achieve.

“I would like to say a special thank you to Jose for the faith he has always shown in me. My focus now is on the World Cup and I am looking forward to a successful season ahead.”

Injury saw Fellaini, who joined from Everton in 2013, limited to just 16 Premier League appearances last term, scoring four goals, as the Red Devils finished second to Manchester City.

Jose Mourinho’s side are preparing for another title challenge in 2017-18, and the manager is happy to count on the Belgian, who has made over 150 appearances for the club.

“I am very happy Marouane is staying with us,” he said.

“I always believed in his desire to stay with the club and I am delighted that he has signed a new contract.”

Fellaini will be in action with Belgium on Monday July 2 when they take on Japan in the last 16 of the World Cup.
