Chloë Grace Moretz is always on the go, from starring in hit movies like The Miseducation of Cameron Post to modeling for big name brands like Jimmy Choo. But we were able to catch up with the busy star while celebrating the opening of Maje’s Rockefeller Center flagship boutique. The Parisian label puts out pieces that are somehow both bohemian and understated, and it’s been worn by the likes of Gigi Hadid and Selena Gomez. In fact, the line is so versatile that both Moretz and her mom both love it.

“I can wear it as a 21-year-old and feel so sexy and empowered and confident,” Moretz tells InStyle. “But my mother can also wear it as a 60-year-old woman, and also feel beautiful and confident.”

The brand’s latest line includes updated mockneck sweaters, deconstructed blouses, and twirl-worthy skirts, which all serve as a reminder that fashion doesn’t have to take itself so seriously, to look seriously good. “I think you should always have fun with fashion and art,” Moretz says. “It can be a really fun form of self-expression — as long as you keep it silly and keep it light.”

She leaves that “silly” MO at home when she goes holiday shopping, though. Moretz let us in on the one present she always gets when gift shopping, and it’s surprisingly austere.

“Honestly, I always go with socks,” Moretz says. “I think socks are seriously one of the best gifts you can give anyone. Everyone needs a sock, and they always go down well.” I know I’m not the only one who magically loses a pair or two every time I do laundry, so I might just follow Moretz’s lead and start giving my friends something they can actually use. Just remember that any old pair of socks won’t do. “I travel a lot so I really enjoy finding small brands in different countries who make their own out of wool-blend and cashmere-blend,” Moretz explains. “So it’s kind of silly, but it’s a fun thing I like to do.”
