Green defeated Democrat Justin Kanew to win the race for Tennessee’s 7th District, which was open as Rep. The Associated Press called the 7th District race at 8:08 p.m.

“Voters in this district have answered and here we are,” Green said in his victory speech, according to The Tennessean. “I just got one of the greatest phone calls of my life. Justin Kanew graciously conceded this amazing race.”

Trump nominated Green to be secretary of the Army in April 2017. He withdrew about a month later amid mounting opposition from senators in both parties over controversial statements and his voting record as a Tennessee state senator.

In particular, comments on LGBTQ people and Muslims ignited fierce opposition.

He’s said in the past that “transgender is a disease” and agreed with a questioner who said “we need to take a stand on the indoctrination of Islam in our public schools,” among other controversial statements.

Throughout his brief nomination and in his statement withdrawing, Green defended himself by saying liberals were twisting his words and attacking him for his religion.
