COLLEGEVILLE, Minn – Minnesota State sent 11 wrestlers to compete in the North Country Open in Collegeville, Minnesota Sunday where six found the podium. The Mavericks were in good company at the open tournament with multiple NCAA divisions represented by wrestlers from Minnesota, North Dakota State, Southwest Minnesota State, Saint Johns, and Augsburg.

Derek Herman (Fr., 174 lbs.) (Unattached) continued a streak of top three finishes at open tournaments with a second place finish at the North Country Open. Herman was 3-1 at the tournament collecting a 14-4 major decision over Mike Wagner (Saint Johns), a narrow 9-8 decision against Mitch Kotschevar (Unattached), and a fall in 1:36 against St. Cloud States Tanner Schaefer. The Wells, Minnesota native has now reached 20 wins over the course of the season.

The Mavericks had three wrestler take fourth at the North Country Open. Zach Johnston (Fr., 165 lbs.) completed the tournament with a 4-2 record with three wins coming as a result of bonus-point victories, two falls and a 14-0 major decision. Johnston’s losses both came against the #3 wrestler in the region, Gabe Fogarty of St. Cloud State.

At the 197 pound weight class Chaydon O’Fallon(Jr., 197 lbs.) had a 2-2 record in Collegeville and a fourth place finish with decisions over Brent Chambers (Augsburg) and Ben Thompson (Southwest State). Logan Linderbaum (R-Fr., 285 lbs.) gained fourth place with a 2-1 record that included a 17-3 major decision over John Scepaniak (Unattached).

Trevor Schultz (Sr., 125 lbs.) and Trenton McManus (Fr., 133 lbs.)(Unattached) both finished in fifth place for the Mavericks with 2-2 and 3-2 records respectively.

North Country Open Results

Minnesota State is back in action on Thursday February 2 at Taylor Center, taking the mat against Southwest Minnesota State before traveling to face St. Cloud State Saturday February 4.
