St. Cloud State University redshirt sophomore Devin FitzPatrick (Mahtomedi/Mahtomedi H.S.) has been selected as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week for Dec. 3-9.
FitzPatrick posted a perfect 4-0 record over the past week for the No. 1 nationally ranked Huskies. He opened the week with a 6:49 tech fall against Minot State’s Tyler Sharron on Dec. 5 during SCSU’s 45-3 win over NSIC rival Minot State at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minn. The victory improved SCSU’s record to 7-0, 2-0 NSIC in 2018-19.
He ended his week with a first-place finish in the 165-pound bracket at the 2018 Holiday Inn/Huskies Open and was named the John Oxton Award (tournament MVP) winner at the Huskies Open.
FitzPatrick started the Huskies Open with a 6-5 win over Alfred Daniel of Rochester C.C. in the first round. In the second round, FitzPatrick posted a 4-2 win over Ryan Epps of Augsburg. He won the 165-pound bracket title with a 5-4 decision over Kenny O’Neill of NCAA DI rival South Dakota State.
FitzPatrick is now 13-0 on the season and ranked 8th in the nation in 165-pounds among NCAA DII wrestlers.
SCSU will continue its 2018-19 season with a trip to the NWCA DII National Duals on Jan. 4-5 in Louisville, Kentucky. SCSU is the two-time defending NWCA DII National Duals champion and has won NWCA DII National Dual championships in 2012, 2013, 2017 and 2018.
