Vikings Set To Compete Twice This Week

Augustana takes on Northwestern College and No. 10 Upper Iowa

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Augustana wrestling team puts its six-dual win streak and undefeated conference record on the line this week in a couple of road duals. The Vikings take on the Red Raiders of Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, Thursday at 7:30 and the No. 10 ranked Peacocks of Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa, Sunday at 2 p.m.

Thursday’s dual serves as Augustana’s last nonconference dual of the season and its first nonconference dual against a Division II opponent. Sunday’s match against No. 10 ranked Upper Iowa is Augustana’s fifth match against ranked opponents. The Vikings are 3-1 in such matches and 3-0 against ranked Division II opponents.

The Red Raiders
Northwestern College comes into its dual with Augustana at 3-4 on the season. The Red Raiders have beaten Hastings College, Dakota Wesleyan, and Midland and have fallen to Concordia Nebraska, Briar Cliff, Menlo College, and Morningside College.

The Peacocks
Upper Iowa comes into its match with Augustana at 12-2 and 5-0 in the NISC, having won three-consecutive duals. The Peacocks lone losses came to then-No. 5 McKendree and then-No. 2 Pittsburgh Johnstown. Upper Iowa currently has three nationally-ranked wrestlers, Justin Folley is ranked No. 3 at 133 pounds, Chase Luensman is No. 7 at 149 pounds and Nick Baumler is No. 2 at 197 pounds.

Wrestler to Watch
Redshirt freshman and No. 9 ranked Jack Huffman is 17-7 this season with one fall, three major decisions and three tech falls. If Huffman wrestles Sunday against Upper Iowa, the 133-pound bout would be a battle of ranked opponents as the likely matchup would be against No. 3 ranked Justin Folley.

One Last Thing
A win on Thursday would push the Vikings’ win streak to seven duals. The last time Augustana won seven-consecutive duals was the 2015-16 season from Jan. 8 to Jan. 24. Wins against both Northwestern and Upper Iowa would push the win streak to eight duals, a feat that hasn’t happened since the Vikings won 11-consecutive matches during the 2014-15 season from Jan. 14 to Feb. 12.
