HELL’S KITCHEN, NY — Eight people were injured when a taxi hopped a curb in Hell’s Kitchen and crashed into a busy restaurant, fire officials said.

The crash occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m. at the Westville restaurant on Ninth Avenue between West 53rd and 54th streets, fire officials said. Firefighters and EMS are still operating at the scene and the cause of the crash is currently unknown.

The eight people who were hurt during the crash suffered non life-threatening injuries, FDNY officials said. Five people were taken to area hospitals for treatment and three refused medical care at the scene, FDNY Spokesman Myles Miller said.

Comedy writer Ally Hord, who was dining inside the restaurant when the crash occurred, said in a Twitter post that it was “a miracle everyone is ok with only minor injuries but the screaming and crashing noises were absolutely horrifying.”

Rob O’Neill told Patch that he didn’t see the crash but walked by the restaurant to see the aftermath. The cab appeared to drive over a bike rack before coming into contact with the restaurant and a bicycle was “stuck under the car,” O’Neill said.

The witness said that he saw fire department medics tending to injured people, but that treatment consisted of “mostly just ice packs, it didn’t seem too serious.” O’Neill said he stayed at the scene until the taxi was towed into the street.

A woman who works at a wine bar next door to Westville told Patch that she was working in a basement office when she heard a loud crash and felt the building shake. After running upstairs the woman saw that the taxi destroyed one of the wine bar’s outdoor tables and that half of the vehicle was lodged inside the Westville restaurant, which had been busy during the peak lunch hours, the woman, who did not want to be named, said.
