Politicians weren’t the only ones who brought the crowd to their feet on Day 3 of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on Wednesday. Between speeches and statements, a group of beloved Broadway stars took to the stage for a performance of a familiar tune.

Lead by Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Debra Messing, Audra McDonald, and Darren Criss, a group of 40 musical theater icons joined together for a moving rendition of “What the World Needs Now Is Love” as “a tribute to the lives affected by gun violence.” As they sang, many in the crowd joined arms and swayed back and forth to the music.

Broadway first came together in June to record a cover of the song, originally composed by Burt Bacharach in the ’60s and popularized by Jackie DeShannon, to benefit the victims of the nightclub shooting in Orlando that killed 49 people.

“All of us in the Broadway community are deeply saddened by the senseless tragedy that occurred in Orlando in the early morning hours of June 12,” the participants noted in a video of the recording session.
“We send our love and support and thoughts and prayers to everyone impacted by this act of violence and hate. This terrible cycle of violence and intolerance must end. We want to put out as much love into the world as we can because only love can conquer hate. Love must prevail.”
