Ligue 1 Saturday Night Previews: Week 2

Saturday: Guingamp vs Lyon (19:00 GMT)

In their first home match of the campaign, Guingamp see title hopefuls Lyon visit the Stade du Roudourou. The hosts didn’t get their season off to the best start, losing 1-0 away at Nantes. It certainly isn’t the easiest of fixtures for Jocelyn Gourvennec’s men, but the manager will be hopeful his side can sneak at least a point from this one, as Lorient did against Lyon last weekend.

Lyon were far from their best on the opening weekend, failing to score on home turf against Lorient, so boss Hubert Fournier will be hoping to see a better performance from his players in this one. If the visitors are to put up a sustained title challenge this season, then they need to ruthless against teams in mid-table and below.

Saturday: Angers vs Nantes (19:00 GMT)

Newly-promoted Angers welcome Nantes to the Stade Jean-Bouin in the stadium’s first Ligue 1 match of the season. The newcomers got off to the best possible start last weekend, winning 2-0 away at Montpellier and manager Stephane Moulin will be hoping that their wave of momentum can continue into this match.

Nantes, though, will be out to spoil the party. The visitors also got their campaign off to a winning start as they beat Guingamp 1-0 at home, and despite Angers’ opening weekend heroics, will head into this match as the favourites. Michel Der Zakarian will rightly be wary of the threat posed by the league newcomers, but will fully expect his men to leave with all three points.

Saturday: Troyes vs Nice (19:00 GMT)

Troyes will be searching for their first Ligue 1 win of the season as they welcome Nice to the Stade de l’Aube on Saturday evening. The hosts got their top-flight campaign underway with a goalless draw here against Ajaccio and although Nice should provide a tougher challenge, manager Jean-Marc Furlan will be hopeful his side can take something in front of their home fans.

Nice, meanwhile, head into this match on the back of a 2-1 loss to Monaco. It was a tough start to the season for Claude Puel’s men, and while the manager might not have been expecting to take anything from their opening fixture against title hopefuls Monaco, he will be expecting them to take all three points this weekend against league newcomers Troyes.

Saturday: Rennes vs Montpellier (19:00 GMT)

Rennes meet Montpellier at Roazhon Park with both sides looking to register their first points of the season. The hosts started the campaign with a 2-1 loss away to Bastia, so manager Philippe Montanier will be anxious to see a better performance from his players in front of an expectant home crowd.

Montpellier also disappointed on the opening weekend, suffering a shock 2-0 home loss to league newcomers Angers. Rolland Courbis will want his side to bounce back from that embarrassment as soon as possible and the best way to do that would be to take maximum points from this match.

Saturday: Caen vs Toulouse (19:00 GMT)

Caen will be aiming to build on last weekend’s shock win over Marseille as they welcome Toulouse to the Stade Michel d’Ornano. In the midst of Marcelo Bielsa’s resignation following the match, Caen’s victory and performance was largely overlooked, but manager Patrice Garande will be hoping that the his side’s momentum can quietly continue this weekend.

Toulouse, too, were victorious on the opening weekend, as they beat St Etienne 2-1 at home. It was a big win for Dominique Arribage’s side and they too will be looking to make it a perfect start to the campaign with a second victory here.
