United Rugby Championship: Cardiff sanction players after ‘unacceptable’ incident at a pub

Cardiff have sanctioned a number of unnamed players following an incident at a pub in the Welsh capital earlier this month.

It took place at The Grange Pub on October 1 following their 31-18 defeat to the Lions in the United Rugby Championship.

Players are alleged to have threatened staff and thrown eggs, but the club refused to divulge what specifically happened.

They have also not named the culprits, instead stating that “sanctions have been levied” against the perpetrators, but Cardiff did say that the victims have “accepted the outcome.”

Denying certain social media allegations

“Varying sanctions have been levied against a small number of individual players, who have all expressed their deep remorse,” read a statement.

“Those impacted by the behaviour have been kept fully abreast of the process and have accepted the outcome.

“While a small number of the squad were found to have behaved in an unacceptable manner, the club would like to stress that much of the social media speculation was incorrect, suggesting events that did not take place and was therefore unfair to a number of individuals.

“The players in question have been reminded of the club’s cultural values and their expected conduct both as an employee and public figure. This reminder will also be delivered to the entire squad.”

It is alleged that two players made physical threats towards the pub’s bar manager, while eggs were reportedly thrown at tables and on the floor.

Zero tolerance

“Cardiff Rugby takes a zero tolerance approach to any form of misconduct on and off the field and offer its apologies to anyone impacted by the players’ behaviour,” Cardiff’s statement added.

“The club now consider this matter closed and will be making no further comments.”

The Welsh region opened the United Rugby Championship campaign with a 20-13 victory over Munster but then suffered poor defeats to Glasgow Warriors and the Lions.

They have since claimed two wins in a row since that loss to the South Africans – and the subsequent incident – but many supporters are unhappy with Cardiff’s statement.
