The German stopper initially moved to the Parc de Princes in 2016, but has fallen down the pecking order under Thomas Tuchel behind fellow goalkeepers Gianluigi Buffon and Alphonse Areola.

Trapp had been strongly linked with a move to Patrick Viera’s Nice, but financial limitations at Les Aiglons meant that Eintracht Frankfurt ultimately became the preferred destination for the 28-year-old.

The 6 ft 2 in goalkeeper returns to the club he made 82 appearances for between 2012 and 2015, replacing Lukáš Hrádecký at the Waldstadion, who had recently left to join fellow Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen.

Trapp is a German international with three senior caps to his name and was an unused substitute in Germany’s disastrous World Cup campaign at Russia 2018.
