The French Football Federation (FFF) is set to ask the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the body that determines the laws and rules of the game, for permission to put microphones on Ligue 1 referees, RMC Sport are reporting.

The referees’ federal committee president André Borghini has called for France to be a test federation for equipping fooball referees with microphones during a match from start to finish. “It would be great if viewers were able to hear what the referee is saying“, states Borghini. The FFF executive committee member adds that Ligue 1 referees are completely supportive of the idea.

Were the IFAB to deny or postpone such the reform, the FFF would instead like to test the idea only for when referees are called by the VAR. The IFAB will reportedly hold a trial at next week’s Club World Cup in Morocco. Furthermore, Borghini is pushing for referees to face the media after a game as players and coaches do, L’Equipe are reporting, for more transparency. FFF now awaits IFAB’s stance regarding those proposals.
