Footballers’ watches: five top players and their favourite timepieces
Football fans have had an eventful past few years, with the women’s Euros, men’s Euros, and the FIFA Men’s World Cup in Qatar all falling within a two-year period. And the excitement doesn’t end there either, as 2023 is the years of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and we have another Euro’s for the men’s team to look forward to in 2024.
Throughout the years, footballers have often been considered to be style icons. And this is just as prevalent to this day, from Jack Grealish’s trademark undercut to the Lionesses’ collaboration with Marks and Spencer, the official tailor of the England Senior Women’s Team. But one accessory many players aren’t seen without is a stylish designer watch. Here, we’ll take you through what watches famous footballers wear.
Alexia Putellas
Considered to be one of the best footballers in the world at present, Alexia Putellas is beloved in her home nation of Spain, and by Barcelona FC fans who consider her to be one of the greatest midfielders in the game. As well as being the Barcelona women’s team second-highest all-time scorer, she has made the most appearances for Spain’s international team, with a record-breaking 100 caps.
Not only is Alexia Putellas a star midfielder, but she has a keen interest in fashion. This is evident in her sponsorship deals: as well as becoming a brand ambassador for high street fashion brand Mango, she is also an official Hublot Friend of the Brand. The footballing star has been spotted wearing Hublot watches on a number of occasions — she even sported one of the brands timepieces when accepting her trophy at the men’s and women’s UEFA Player of the Year awards. The timepiece she chose to wear for the big event was a Hublot Classic Fusion King, encrusted with gold diamonds making it the ideal accessory for a very special occasion.
Lionel Messi
An icon of the game and a name known across the world, Lionel Messi cemented his status as one of the greatest of all time early on in his career, but Argentina’s World Cup win in Qatar has been the icing on the cake. The forward has scored over 800 senior career goals and has received seven prestigious Ballon d’Or awards, the most any player has received to date.
It’s safe to say that Lionel Messi is one of football’s biggest stars, but many don’t realise that he has a keen interest in timepieces too. This footballer has a vast collection of watches and has sported many different brands over the years, including timepieces from Patek Philippe, Jacob & Co, who he is currently an ambassador of, and Audemars Piguet, who he was an ambassador of in 2010. Messi also appears to own a vast collection of Rolex watches, including the Rolex Datejust, the discontinued Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yellow, and the Rolex Yacht Master, which he was spotted wearing on the day he signed his first with PSG in 2021.
Sam Kerr
Another icon of women’s football and the captain of Australia, Sam Kerr is sure to be one to watch in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, with the competition taking place on her home soil. As well as being a sensational forward, scoring an impressive 50 goals in 62 games, she made her first appearance in senior international football at just 15 years old. With plenty of major events ahead in her career, it’s safe to say that she will be wowing football fans for years to come.
And she is just as passionate about her ventures outside her football career too. This includes her ambassadorship with iconic watch brand IWC Schaffhausen. The brand has attracted numerous other sports greats to become ambassadors over the years as well, from the American football great Tom Brady to F1 superstar Lewis Hamilton.
Harry Kane
A hero of England fans and considered to be one of the best male strikers in the world, Harry Kane has had an extraordinary career so far. In 2023 the England skipper became not just the country’s all-time highest goalscorer, but the all-time goalscorer for Spurs too — and he’ll no doubt be looking to break more records for his new club Bayern Munich. Under his lead, the men’s England team have enjoyed more success than they have since 1966. He will no doubt become one of England’s most celebrated players of all time by the end of his career.
And when it comes to footballers watches, Harry Kane has a vast collection for us to admire. The player is an avid watch collector, with timepieces from a variety of brands such as Audemars Piguet and Rolex, including the Rolex Daytona ‘Rainbow’ he famously wore at the FIFA 2022 Men’s World Cup in Qatar. But it’s clear from Kane’s collection that he has a particular passion for Patek Philippe. He’s worn a variety of models over the years, including a Patek Philippe Aquanaut Chronograph, a Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time, and an especially uncommon Patek Philippe 5270P in platinum.
Alex Morgan
Another stylish sporting icon is US footballing great Alex Morgan. The striker plays for San Diego Wave FC, as well as the USWNT. As co-captain, she helped lead her international team to success in 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. And Morgan is an inspiration off the pitch as well as on it, being a strong voice for improving conditions for female players.
She also has a range of sponsorship deals and partnerships off the pitch, with brands such as Google, Nike, and Coca-Cola, as well as the iconic watchmaker Hublot. Morgan has often been spotted sporting Hublot timepieces too, most notably including a blue Hublot Big Bang in the 2019 Women’s World Cup Championship Parade.
