RG Snyman: Munster lock backed for Springbok recall after impressing since return

Springbok prop Steven Kitshoff believes that RG Snyman is producing the type of displays which will get him back into the international reckoning.

The lock has barely played over the last three years, suffering two ACL ruptures during his time at Munster, but he returned in March and has gradually re-found his form and match fitness.

Snyman was outstanding in the Irish outfit’s stunning 26-24 triumph over the Stormers on Saturday, a victory which ended the South African side’s 19-game win streak at Cape Town Stadium.

The Bok, who last played for his country in the 2019 World Cup final, was at the heart of their momentous win, which went a long way to securing Champions Cup rugby for next season.

Kitshoff captained the Stormers in the clash and, despite the disappointment of losing, praised the efforts of his South African team-mate.

Chuffed

“He is just a quality player. He is getting his game fitness and confidence back that we were used to back in 2019,” the prop said.

“I am chuffed for RG. I think he is really knocking hard on the door to possibly getting a recall to the Springbok side.”

Kitshoff and Snyman are friends while in Springbok camp but the Stormers loosehead admitted that his second-row opponent was “irritating today.”

“He is my mate, but today, I didn’t like him a lot,” the 31-year-old said with a smirk.

Huge performance

Munster head coach Graham Rowntree was similarly impressed with the performance of Snyman, describing it as “huge.”

Providing the lock can stay fit, it will be a big boost for a side that will seek to push on in 2023/24 after a solid first campaign under Rowntree.

“He was constantly involved, on both sides of the ball. Of course, he is a huge presence in the set-piece and the maul. He’s had a tricky time, and it is well-documented,” the 51-year-old said.

“But he has been great with the group. He is in our leadership group and the lads really respect him and have taken to him.”
