Official | Reims sign winger Moussa Doumbia for free from Rostov

Stade de Reims has today completed its third signing of the summer transfer window with winger Moussa Doumbia joining on a free. Doumbia, a Malian international, has spent the last 4 years in Russia turning out for FC Rostov. Reims has signed the midfielder to a four-year contract with his previous deal expiring at the end of this month.

With the signing of Doumbia, Reims will be getting a pacey, skillful midfielder capable of playing multiple positions. The Malian international was deployed in more advanced roles for Rostov, often switching between the right and left flanks, but is also adept in a more reserved wide role. Naturally right footed, Doumbia would often cut in from the left or play as a more traditional winger when positioned on the right.

Doumbia, still just 24, had most of his football education in his native Mali before moving to Rostov-on-Don, Russia in 2014. While his ability to play in numerous roles was useful for Rostov, Doumbia struggled to nail down a place in his side’s first eleven. The largest number of league appearances the midfielder had came this season, with 18 in total. However, 11 of those 18 appearances were made off the bench, with Doumbia used primarily as an impact substitute player.

Following the departure of Reim’s talismanic attacker Jordan Siebatcheu, there should be ample opportunity for Doumbia to make an impression. The newly promoted Ligue 1 side will be hoping that cost-effective additions like Doumbia will help preserve its Ligue 1 status.
