As confirmed by Lorient’s twitter account this afternoon, the Breton side have signed Cameroonian left-back Darline Yongwa (21) from Ligue 2 outfit Chamois Niortais.
The full-back, who was developed in one of Cameroon’s best football schools in Douala, has been playing for Niort since the start of 2019.
Having played a total of 73 games for Niort, the Cameroonian defender will venture into the top flight of French football for the first time, having avoided relegation into the third tier during the 2020/21 season, via the Ligue 2 playoffs.
The move is reported to have cost Lorient €1.5m, with the 21-year-old signing on a four year contract. Les Merlus narrowly avoided relegation from Ligue 1 last season, eventually finishing 16th, with a four point gap to Saint-Étienne. Yongwa ought to offer more options to the Breton defence, filling a position that was highlighted as a weakness during the 2021/22 season.
