During a segment on CNN’s “State of the Union,” host Jake Tapper asked Sasse if there is “any chance” he will challenge Trump, noting that Sasse is traveling to Iowa this week.

Sasse responded by explaining that he will be in Iowa because he lost a bet on football.

“Well, first of all, let’s be clear why I’m going to be in Iowa this weekend. I don’t want to admit it anywhere, let alone on national TV, but Nebraska lost to Iowa last year in a football game and I lost a bet,” Sasse said.

“So I have to drive Uber in Iowa next weekend. So that’s the reason I’m going to be in Iowa. It’s about Hawkeyes and Huskers bloodletting on the football field and the aftermath of that.”

The senator, responding to criticisms last month from Iowa’s Republican Party chairman that he is an “arrogant academic,” quoted the Declaration of Independence.

“That’s what America is about. It’s not about Republicans and Democrats who have important differences on policy screaming at each other that the other side wants to kill somebody,” Sasse said.

“Politics are subordinate to the things that are supposed to unite Americans, and this is a weekend that we should be celebrating all that.”
