Hall of Fame Coach Roy A. Minter died Sunday, September 1st at Carris Health Rice Hospital in Willmar. He was 83 years old.
Minter was a state champion wrestler for Owatonna High School in 1954. He went on to wrestle at Mankato State where he was a three-time NCAA Division I All-American. Minter coached wrestling at Worthington High School and Willmar Community College, retiring in 1992. He was inducted into the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association Dave Bartelma Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1979 and was a Charter Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Minnesota Chapter, inducted in 2003.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 am, Thursday, September 5th at Church of St. Mary in Willmar. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm, Wednesday at the church and continue one hour prior to his service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Roy Minter National Wrestling Hall of Fame Minnesota Chapter Profile:
Roy Minter won the state championship as a senior at Owatonna High School in 1954. Roy went to nearby Mankato State and wrestled for the “Legendary” Rummy Macias. Roy earned three NCAA I All-American Honors and won the NAIA National Championship in 1957. Roy finished second to the “Legendary” Dan Hodge in 1956 at the NCAA I tournament. He also won three post-junior national AAU tournaments.
Roy taught and coached at Worthington High School where his teams won 99 matches. Roy went to Willmar Community College in 1968 and coached there through 1992. Roy was a Professor in the HPER Department, and also coached football and baseball.
At the time of his retirement in 1992, Roy was the winningest NJCAA coach in the nation with 325 wins. Roy tutored over 50 All-Americans at WCC and his teams won 17 MCC State Championships, and earned many coach of the year honors.
Roy was NJCAA Man of the Year and elected to its Hall of Fame. Roy is in close to a dozen Halls of Fame, including MWCA Bartelma Coaches Hall, and was recently named to the West Central Tribune Sports Hall of Fame.
