A British backpacker has described her ordeal after being kidnapped and raped by a tattooed Australian during a 900-mile road trip through the Outback.

Elisha Greer, from Liverpool, feared for her life while she was held at gunpoint by Marcus Martin, a man she had met at an Australia Day celebration in Cairns, Queensland. 

Ms Greer was only 21 and had looked forward to what she hoped would be the trip of a lifetime and Martin, 23, appeared to be an ideal companion.

But the adventure turned into a two-month ordeal, during which she was kept captive by an "utterly crazy" man.

Appearing on Channel 7’s Sunday Night programme, Ms Greer said she was initially charmed by Martin.

"He just seemed like a nice guy, and I just chatted away to him. He seemed fun. He didn’t seem like a psycho, to say the least. He just seemed like a normal guy at the time."

But his appearance was deceptive. Their relationship deteriorated as Martin became more possessive.

"He was crazy," Ms Greer added.  "Completely and utterly crazy."

On one occasion Martin, who was high on crystal meth, turned violent and turned on Ms Greer in a hotel room.

"He started hitting me. Just hitting me and hitting me and hitting me," Ms Greer added. "He wrecked the whole room, punched through the cupboards. He flipped the beds around.

"I thought he would kill me."

Her ordeal came to an end when she stopped at a petrol station to fill up the white Mitsubishi Pajero, she had been driving.

Beverley Page, the owner of the filling station, said Ms Greer appeared "in a state of shock" and "zombie-like" and had tears streaming down her face.

When she drove off without paying, Ms Page alerted the police who pulled the car over, finding a terrified Ms Greer at the wheel and her captor hiding in the back.

Martin, who pleaded guilty to three counts of rape and one count of deprivation of liberty at the Cairns District Court in north Queensland in October 2018, will be sentenced on May 28.
