Martin Selmayr’s populist ‘horror scenario’: Trump, Le Pen, Johnson, Grillo
Jean-Claude Juncker’s chief of staff warns about what next year’s G7 could look like.
Martin Selmayr, the powerful chief of staff for European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, warned Thursday that next year’s G7 summit could see Donald Trump join a “horror scenario” roll-call of populist politicians from Europe.
Juncker is attending the G7 summit in Ise-Shima featuring the leaders of the U.S., Canada, Britain, Italy, Germany, France, and hosts Japan.
“#G7 2017 with Trump, Le Pen, Boris Johnson, Beppe Grillo?” Selmayr tweeted Thursday morning, name checking the presumptive Republican nominee for U.S. president, the leader of France’s National Front, the pro-Brexit former mayor of London, and the founder of Italy’s 5 Star Movement. “A horror scenario that shows well why it is worth fighting populism. #withJuncker”
Selmayr’s boss also took the opportunity at a press conference to warn the former London mayor (and aspiring British prime minister) Boris Johnson that he should come back to Brussels, the city he once covered as a journalist, “in order to check in Brussels if everything he’s telling British people is in line with reality.”
That wasn’t the case, Juncker said, “so he would be welcome in Brussels at any time.”
