The fight for equality for the LGBTQ community is nowhere near the end. Western world may have accepted a human being’s right to choose a partner and even celebrating it, but many countries seem far from accepting homosexuality as a part of the society.

Malaysia is one such country that has brought the world’s attention to it, considering its alleged insensitivity. Homosexuality is taboo in the country and the country retains its colonial-era criminal ban on sodomy, with punishments of up to 20 years in prison, caning or a fine. A contest was recently held at a leading Malaysian university that asked for ideas to “convert” gay students. This move sparked anger among citizens Wednesday, with activists warning it could drive people in the Muslim-majority country to suicide, reported AFP
