Season 2 of Big Little Lies doesn’t premiere until 2019, but Nicole Kidman just gave us something juicy to hold us over until then: a first look at Meryl Streep’s character.
In case you forgot, Streep is joining the Emmy-winning cast for their sophomore run, and she’ll portray Mary Louise Wright, the mother of Celeste’s (Nicole Kidman) abusive and dead husband, Perry Wright. In other words, Meryl Streep is basically Nicole’s mother-in-law on the show.

So does she fit the bill?
In the shot below, Streep looks like she could honestly be on her way to winning another Emmy. The photo finds the Oscar winner with Kidman and the two boys that portray her children. “First day on set with Meryl and ‘my’ darling boys!’ Kidman captioned the photo.

According to The Telegraph, Streep’s character is swooping in to help the family grieve the loss of their father. Interestingly, Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty turned to Kidman—who’s a dear friend of Streep’s—for help in casting the Hollywood favorite. “Nicole sent me an email saying, ‘Ask and you shall receive,’” Moriarty told The Telegraph.
As for what we can expect from the plotline, it sounds juicy. “She deeply loved her son … as much as any mother can love her son,” Moriarty said of Mary Louise. “She had a slightly fraught relationship with her daughter-in-law, so it’s a very complicated, difficult time.”
2019 couldn’t come any sooner.
