I definitely thought that the cycling shorts trend was a fleeting movement reserved only for the Kardashians, Jenners, and Hadids of the world. But, boy, was I wrong. Bike-short lookalikes infiltrated every single major fashion week show around the world this season, which means come spring time, we can all expect to be snapping on a pair.
In New York, the models at Maryam Nassir Zadeh’s fashion show graced the runway in mint and coral versions.
In London, Toga added baroque prints to the gym shorts, pairing them with cutout sweaters and see-through blouses.
In Milan, Karl Lagerfeld worked the trend into the Fendi collection, alongside matching sports bras and clear raincoats.
And moments ago in Paris, Lagerfeld sent barefoot models down the sandy Chanel runway in stretchy shorts (as shown at the top).
That means six months from now, the trend will become even bigger as all of those fast-fashion stores rush to give us the cycling-short trend for less, which, by the way, was a staple in Princess Diana’s closet.
If you’re still on the fence about wearing cycling shorts outside of the gym, just remember that leggings as pants were once taboo. You don’t have to go all Emily Ratajkowski and pair your skin-tight shorts with a crop top. Kourtney Kardashian has worn hers with a peplum denim jacket and heels.
Or throw on a cozy sweater with your cycling shorts, à la Kendall Jenner.
You could also play it safe and go with the most popular cycling short combo, which is, hands down, the blazer duo. We spotted a ton of influencers jumping on that bandwagon earlier this year, which we should’ve known would mean we’d all be wearing it soon enough. Keep reading for ways to shop the look right now.
